In the tragic incident that took place on Friday morning, heavy rains and continuous cloudbursts caused extensive damage in several districts of Uttarakhand, with five people dead and 11 missing. The calamity triggered massive landslides that razed several housed and buried people under the debris. as per officials.
The worst affected were Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Bageshwar districts, which are yet to recover from the disaster that struck Tharali on August 23. This new natural calamity has proved to be another major crisis for Uttarakhand this monsoon. Earlier on August 5, flash floods in Uttarkashi district had badly devastated the Dharali area, especially the Dharali area, which is an important stop on the Gangotri route and has many hotels and homestays. Along with this, the neighbouring Harsil area was also affected by the floods, where the army camp suffered heavy damage and people got very little time to escape.
According to the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA), heavy overnight rains damaged nearly half a dozen houses in Pausari gram panchayat of Kapkot area of Bageshwar district, leaving two people dead, three missing and one injured. The deceased have been identified as Basanti Devi and Bachuli Devi, while Basanti Devi’s son Pawan was rescued in an injured condition. Her husband Ramesh Chandra Joshi and Girish and Puran Joshi, all residents of Pausari, are also missing, as reported by NDTV.
A landslide buried a house and a cowshed in Mopata village of Chamoli district, killing a couple and injuring a person, said Chief Development Officer Abhishek Tripathi.
Relief operations are underway and officials are making every possible effort to trace the missing and provide assistance to the affected families. The incessant monsoon rains continue to pose a serious challenge for the region, which is trying to recover from earlier disasters.
