A 35-year-old undertrial, Vishal Gawli, who was arrested by Thane police in December last year for the alleged rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl after kidnapping her from Kalyan, has died by suicide in Taloja Jail. As quoted by Times of India, Deepak Surve, Senior Inspector of Kharghar police station mentioned, “We recieved information from Taloja jail officer that on Sunday around 4.30 am, the undertrial Vishal Gawli went to the toilet at the barrack and hanged himself using a towel tying it’s other end to the iron grille of the toilet.”
According to his statement, the toilet lacks a door to ensure guard oversight during undertrial using the bathroom. Vishal went to the toilet early in the morning where the undertrial prisoners were asleep and on-duty guards at the barrack were far away. Thane police arrested Vishal’s wife Sakshi in Buldhana in December last year. She was arrested for helping her husband dispose of the girl’s body. She is currently being held at Byculla Women’s Jail. The body of the deceased, Gawli, has been sent to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for a postmortem examination, as reported by Times of India.
