RG Kar Medical College: Doctors protesting over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College have agreed to hold a meeting with the West Bengal government to address their concerns and discuss the possibility of returning to duty. The doctors have requested a live telecast of the meeting and insisted that a delegation of 30 representatives be present.

Government’s Response and Meeting Plans

The Mamata Banerjee-led government, however, has asked the doctors to limit their delegation to 10-15 members for the meeting, which is scheduled to take place at 6 PM today at the state secretariat. Despite a Supreme Court order on Monday directing the doctors to resume work by 5 PM on Tuesday, the protests have continued. The doctors had also demanded the removal of the Health Secretary, from whom they received the initial meeting request.

Doctors Seek Clarity from Chief Minister

On Wednesday morning, the protesting doctors stated that they had agreed to the meeting and had emailed the Chief Minister’s Office to clarify the confusion regarding her presence at the discussion. A doctor representing the protestors revealed, “In the e-mail sent to us, there was no mention of the presence of the Chief Minister. We emailed her at 3:50 AM today, outlining our demands, but we have yet to receive a response.”

Later in the day, the Bengal Chief Secretary sent a fresh e-mail inviting the doctors to the 6 PM meeting, once again reminding them of the Supreme Court order that directed them to return to work by Tuesday evening.

Supreme Court Directive

The Supreme Court’s order on Monday ensured that no punitive action, including transfers, would be taken against the protesting doctors if they resumed work. The protests were sparked after the body of a trainee doctor was found in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9, igniting outrage and calls for increased safety measures for medical professionals.
