Earthquake in Meghalaya’s Tura: A 3.4 magnitude of earthquake was felt near Tura in Meghalaya on early Thursday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology(NCS). The NSC observed tectonic plate movement 37 kilometres east northeast of Tura about 3:46 a.m. The depth of the earthquake was 5 kilometres.

The National Center for Seismology tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.4, Occurred on 24-11-2022, 03:46:25 IST, Lat: 25.60 and Long: 90.56, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 37 km ENE of Tura, Meghalaya, India.”

The shift of tectonic plates beneath the earth’s surface was sensed about 3:46 a.m., 37 kilometres east northeast of Tura, according to the NCS. The earthquake was 5 kilometres below ground. The National Center for Seismology tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.4, Occurred on 24-11-2022, 03:46:25 IST, Lat: 25.60 and Long: 90.56, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 37km ENE of Tura, Meghalaya, India.”

When an earthquake happens, it is caused by the earth’s outermost layer trembling as a result of moving tectonic plates. An earthquake occurs when two blocks of the Earth’s surface move against one other.

The northern and northeastern parts of India are particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because they are located on the boundary (fault zones) of two massive tectonic plates. As the Indian plate pressed against the Nepalese plate, the Himalayas were formed. The two plates colliding also made both countries prone to earthquakes.

A few days before, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake also struck in Indonesia, killing at least 271 people.
