1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: Citing ample evidence in the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court ordered CBI to frame charges against Congress Leader Jagdish Tytler, on August 30. The Court’s ruling on the horrific burning of three Sikh men at the Pul Bangash Gurdwara in Delhi comes after about 40 years.
Tytler will face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code- 302 (murder) and 109 (abetment) among other serious allegations. The chilling evidence frames Tytler for rioting (Section 147 of IPC) and participating in unlawful assembly (Section 143 of IPC). He is also held for stirring hatred among different communities based on race, religion, residence, place of birth, caste, language, and ethnicity (Section 153A of IPC).

Tytler Allegedly Provoked The Mob
This verdict comes in response to a charge sheet filed in May last year by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Tytler was accused of ‘inciting, instigating and provoking the mob’ gathered near the Pul Bangash Gurdwara on November 1, 1984, leading to the destruction of the gurdwara and the brutal killing of Sardar Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Gurcharan Singh.
Sikh Community Welcomes Long-Awaited Relief
Harmeet Singh Kalka, President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, expressed significant relief over the Delhi Court’s decision. The Sikh community remains hopeful that Tytler will be imprisoned soon, he added.

Violent Backlash Resulted In Big Massacre
According to the CBI’s charge sheet, Tytler incited the mob by shouting “Kill the Sikhs, they have killed our mother!” – a reference to Former PM India Gandhi’s assassination led by her Sikh Bodyguards, just the previous day, on October 31, 1984. The assassination was done in retaliation to Operation Blue Star’s raid on the Golden Temple. This incident triggered a violent backlash resulting in the killing of approximately 3,350 Sikhs, with 2,800 killed in Delhi alone.
