On the night of August 18, the hostel management at Adarsh Nursing College in Bengaluru sprayed rat repellent, causing 19 students to develop severe breathing issues and require hospitalization. Officials confirmed the incident on Monday, August 19, revealing that the repellent, intended to drive away rats, created a hazardous situation for the students.
Rat poison mishap in Bengaluru hostel
DCP West Bengaluru S Girish said the students were having problems breathing because of poisonous substances present in the spray. Girish said, ‘Breathing problems sickened a total of 19 students, and we immediately admitted them to nearby hospitals along with staff and other students who were present in the hostel.’
Three of the 19 students, Jayan Varghese, Dileesh, and Jo Mon, are in critical condition and have been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit. ‘Almost all students have received treatment and are stable except for three who are seriously ill and under observation in the ICU,’ added the DCP.

Authorities investigate toxic exposure incident
The police have acted swiftly after the incident. DCP Girish said, ‘We will register a case under section 286 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2017 against the hostel management staff responsible for sprinkling rat poison.’ Section 286 prescribes negligent conduct about poisonous substances.
Authorities are investigating how the hostel applied the toxic substance and whether the spraying followed proper safety protocols. The health and safety of students in the hostels are one of the top-most priorities, and officials have vowed at all costs to ensure accountability for the mishap.
