New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman came down heavily in the Parliament on Thursday at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as she reminded the latter of an incident from 1989 relating to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Sitharaman asked DMK if they have forgotten Jayalalithaa. The union minister started her statement saying that she agreed that women are suffering everywhere including in Manipur and Rajasthan but there was an incident took place on 25th March 1989 in Tamil Nadu Assembly.

“… I want to draw attention of the entire House towards an incident took place on 25th March 1989 in Tamil Nadu Assembly when Jayalalithaa’s saree was pulled in the Assembly. At that time, she was the Leader of Opposition (LoP),” said the union minister.

She continued, “DMK members who were sitting in the Assembly harassed her and even laughed at her… Has DMK forgotten Jayalalithaa?”

“You pulled her saree, you demeaned her. Jayalalithaa vowed that day that she would not be coming to the House unless she becomes the CM. After two years, she came back as Tamil Nadu CM…”

The Finance minister made the statement when she rose to her chair in the Lower House to speak during the no-cofidence motion discussion in the House. She pointed fingers at the DMK members and said they should not forget the incident happened with the former CM of Tamil Nadu.

In 1989, Jayalalitha was humiliated 

On the day in question, Jayalalitha made accusations against the then ruling government and then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi allegedly made derogatory remarks against the authenticity of Jayalalitha’s saree.

After which, the LoP started to walk out of the Parliament when a few DMK members allegedly followed her and her saree was torn.
