New Delhi: Following conviction in the 2019 defamation case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as the Lok Sabha member on Friday.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat has announced his constituency, Wayanad, vacant. The Election Commission will soon announce a special election for the seat.

“Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 23 March, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” the Lok Sabha Secretariat said in a notification issued today.

On Thursday, the court awarded imprisonment of 2 years to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. Later, the court granted bail to Gandhi. Meanwhile, the order has been suspended for next 30 days so that the Congress MP can appeal in the High Court.

Gandhi was convicted for his remark at a Lok Sabha polls rally in Karnataka on April 13, 2019. “Why all the thieves, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi, have Modi in their names,” Gandhi allegedly said during the rally.

and-old party has alleged that it is a “conspiracy” to silence Rahul Gandhi who had been raising questions over the relationship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani.
