On the occasion of Independence Day 2025, a total of 1,090 members of the police, fire services, Home Guard and Civil Defence (HG&CD) and Correctional Services have been awarded Gallantry and Service Medals for showing remarkable service and commitment to their duties.
This includes 233 Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).

The Medal for Gallantry is awarded for rare or conspicuous acts of bravery in the circumstances of saving a life; preserving property; preventing crime; or arresting criminals, and the nature of the risk endured in respect of their duty.

Among the 233 gallantry awards, 152 personnel from Jammu & Kashmir, 54 personnel from Left Wing Extremism affected areas, 3 from the North-East and 24 from other areas. Awards were given to 226 police personnel, 6 from Fire services, and 1 from Home Guard & Civil Defence.
The President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PDMS) is awarded for a special and distinguished record of service, and the Medal for Meritorious Service (MMS) is awarded for valuable service characterised by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
Of the 99 PSM recipients, 89 were from Police Services, 5 from Fire Services, 3 from Civil Defence and Home Guard, and 2 from Correctional Services. Of the 758 MSM recipients, 635 were from Police Services, 51 from Fire Services, 41 from Civil Defence and Home Guard and 31 from Correctional Services.
These awards recognize the steadfast commitment and bravery of personnel in all parts of India who work relentlessly to save lives, maintain order, and uphold the law.
India is preparing to mark its 79th Independence Day on Friday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to hoist the national flag on the occasion at Red Fort, Delhi.
