The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, has declared Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as its official candidate for the Vice Presidential election. The announcement was made by Union Minister and BJP President JP Nadda in a press conference on Sunday evening.
JP Nadda said that the alliance intends to elect the Vice President unanimously, and for this the opposition parties have also been contacted. He also stressed that the NDA wants to conduct the election in a peaceful manner by building a consensus among all political parties.
It is worth noting that on July 21, on the first day of the monsoon session, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President due to health reasons, after which the post became vacant. The Election Commission has fixed the date of voting for this on September 9 and counting of votes on the same day.
68-year-old C.P. Radhakrishnan has a political and administrative career spanning over four decades. Here are some key facts about him:
Current role: He is the Governor of Maharashtra since July 2024.
Previous responsibilities: Earlier, he was the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. Along with this, from March to July 2024, he also took additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry.
Administrative activism: In the first four months of his tenure in Jharkhand, he visited all 24 districts and met the public and officials.
Political experience: He has been a Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore twice and has also been the President of Tamil Nadu BJP.
Social campaign: During 2004 to 2007, he took out a 93-day 19,000 km long Rath Yatra, raising issues like Jal Sanyog, anti-terrorism, uniform civil code, eradication of untouchability and de-addiction. He also did two other padayatras.
