A heart-wrenching story of deceit and hopelessness has emerged from Punjab, where Lovepreet Kaur, a resident of the Kapurthala, shared her ill-fated story of immigration to the United States. The 30-year-old woman who began her journey on January 2 with her 10-year-old son, was lured by an agent who promised her a direct route to the US. However, her dreams were crushed after she was deported to India along with 103 others on Wednesday.
In an exclusive interview with The Indian Express, Lovepreet revealed that after she paid an enormous amount of Rs 1 crore to an agent, they were forced to undertake a ‘dunki’ route, navigating through various countries. Tears fell from her cheeks as she spoke about how she endured pain and challenges during her journey.
Challenging Journey
According to her ordeal, she was first taken via flight along with others to Medellin in Colombia and kept there for almost two consecutive weeks. They were next flown to San Salvador and then forced to walk for more than 180 minutes to Guatemala. They traveled via taxi to the Mexican border later and after staying there for two days, they entered the US on January 27.
US Authorities Detain Lovepreet And Others
In a chilling turn of events, the US authorities detained Lovepreet and others after they moved the country’s border. She was quoted as saying, “When we reached the US, we were asked to remove our SIM cards and small ornaments like earrings and bangles. I had previously lost my luggage in other countries, so I had no funds or things to deposit. We were kept in a camp for five days.” She later recalled that on February 2, they were hand-cuffed and chained from the waist to the legs.
She also shared details on how she was left uncertain and confused during the 40-hour-long journey in the US military aircraft. ‘We were left clueless about where we were taken, and when we finally reached India, I was shocked. It felt like all our dreams were crushed in a flash,’ she recollected.
“Left With Nothing But Pain”
Lovepreet began her journey to the US with dreams of a better future for her son and a new life there. Her voice tinged as she recalled, “My family took a loan to pay the agent, hoping we would have a better future. But, everything is destroyed now.” What was supposed to be a fresh start turned into a nightmare for Lovepreet and she is ‘left with nothing but pain’. Meanwhile, she believes the government would take action against the agents and get their money back.
