A 17-year-old girl, who was eight months pregnant, died after allegedly jumping from the third floor of a house in north-west Delhi’s Pooth Khurd area, a senior police officer said on Thursday. A young girl fell from the terrace of her sister’s home, suffering severe injuries. She was then taken to a nearby doctor and then transferred to Bhagwati Hospital in Rohini, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident took place at around 12 pm on July 19. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami, the girl was in a live-in relationship with a man named Pinku who is a labourer. Both of them hailed from the same village in Bihar, and they had been living in Pooth Khurd.
“Her elder sister’s statement alleges that Pinku used to forcefully keep the minor with him and had established physical relations against her will,” the DCP said.
According to the police, the couple frequently argued, and the man had been physically abusive toward the woman.
When her family discovered the relationship, they took her back to their village in Bihar. “The man followed her there and convinced the family to allow her to return to Delhi. She eventually came back, but the relationship remained troubled, and the alleged abuse continued,” police said.
DCP Swami stated that on July 19, the girl was staying at her sister’s house. When the sister left for work at the industrial area and returned home, she came to know that the girl had gone up to the terrace at around 12 PM and jumped from the terrace, plunging to the street and sustaining serious injuries.
“She was given medical attention, but despite best efforts, the doctors declared her dead during treatment at the hospital,” Swami said.
Based on the sister’s statement, the facts of the case, and the post-mortem report, police have registered a case against Pinku under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Section 64(1) (punishment for rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, DCP Swami said. In addition, efforts are being made to locate and arrest the accused, he added.
