Mumbai: Maharashtra Health Minister Tanaji Sawant Wednesday informed that a total number of 352 H3N2 cases have been reported in the state so far.
He also mentioned that the virus is not fatal and it can be cured with proper medical treatement. He asked people to stay calm assuring them that there is no need to panic.
The Health Minister further informed that hospitals have been put on alert in the state and asked to take necessary measures to deal with the number of H3N2 virus’ cases.

Kids especially below 5 vulnerable to H3N2 infection
Meanwhile, the doctors in the state have expressed concern over a spurge of the infection among children especially those who are below 5, leaving hospitals overcrowded.
According to the health officials, a majority of children had to land in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to acute H3N2 infection. In many cases, patients are not repsonding well to the medication, especially the antibiotics.
However, a report of TOI mentioned the data release by the National Institute of Virology (NIV), which have claimed that out of 2,529 cases, 428 were turned out to be positive of the virus in Pune since January this year.
The data added that most of the cases were reported in the month of February.

What is H3N2?
The H3N2 is a subtype of the seasonal Influenza. Young children and old age persons with co-morbidities are the most vulnerable groups in context of seasonal influenza. So far, Karnataka and Haryana have confirmed one death each from H3N2 influenza.
Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. India every year witnesses two peaks of seasonal influenza: one from Jan to March and other in post monsoon season.

The cases arising from seasonal influenza are expected to decline from March end. State surveillance officers are therefore fully geared to meet this public health challenge.
