Renowned singer Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, under mysterious circumstances while he was swimming in the sea. He was in Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival. It was assumed that Zubeen died due to accidental drowning or a freak accident during scuba diving. But the conflicting reports regarding his demise suggested otherwise.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has issued an official statement regarding Zubeen Garg's death after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police accused four people of murder charges.

The statement read, "The case is currently still being investigated by the SPF, in accordance with the Singapore Coroners Act 2010. Based on our investigations so far, the SPF does not suspect foul play in the death of Mr Garg. Upon completion of the SPF’s investigations, the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner in Singapore, who will hold a Coroner’s Inquiry (“CI"). The CI is currently scheduled for January and February 2026."

A 12,000-page chargesheet has been filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police, where they have accused four people of murder charges.
Meanwhile, the SIT, formed by the state government to investigate the case, submitted the chargesheet at the CJM’s court on December 12. It named seven accused- NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin Sandipan Garg and his two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) Nandeswar Bora, Paresh Baishya, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami and singer Amritprava Mahanta.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the singer's death was not a case of culpable homicide, but a plain and simple murder.
