Popular singer Zubeen Garg passed away on September 1, 2025, during his trip to Singapore for the North East India Festival. Earlier, it was reported that the singer died due to a scuba diving accident, but further investigation revealed conflicting details. His cousin, Sandipan Garg, who is also in the Assam Police Service, has been arrested, making it the fifth arrest in the case.
According to NDTV, Sandipan accompanied the singer to Singapore and was also present at the yacht party. Special Investigation Team (SIT) chief MP Gupta further revealed that the singer’s cousin will be presented in the court and a police remand will be sought.
His wife, Garima, recently shared her first post on Instagram since his sudden death. She wrote, “The last one for this life…But we will be together again, very soon, Goldie!”
The post also had a few lines in Assamese, which translate to: “But now, very soon I/we all need to know why you disappeared physically. Why? Now a big question! This question burns my empty chest day and night. I need answers.” She concluded the post with the hashtag #justiceforZubeenGarg.
Earlier, while speaking to NDTV, Garima alleged negligence in Zubeen’s death. She said, “Whoever was at the place of the incident is under suspicion. We have filed an FIR [first information report]. The organisers, managers, people in the team—we suspect everyone.” She added, “We have full belief in our legal system. I think the investigation will proceed properly. We have requested a fast-track investigation. We have to know what exactly happened that day.”
According to The Times of India, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Zubeen’s friend and bandmate, alleged that manager Siddharth Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta poisoned the singer and ‘deliberately chose a foreign venue to conceal their conspiracy’. A new report submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) reportedly mentioned that Sharma asked Goswami not to share any yacht video with anyone.
