By 1973, Zakir had already launched his first album, “Living in the Material World,” a contribution to music that would lay the foundation for his illustrious career. Over the years, his music earned him India’s highest civilian honors, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.

A 12-year-old Zakir accompanied his father to a musical event that featured legends like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Bismillah Khan. Young Zakir’s performance left the audience spellbound. As a token of appreciation, he received five rupees. In an interview, he once remarked how those five rupees were among his most precious earnings, symbolizing recognition and encouragement at the start of his musical path.
