Renowned Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain passed away in a San Francisco Hospital at 73, his family announced on Monday. Hussain had been undergoing treatment for the past two weeks in the United States. The legendary musician, known for his extraordinary contributions to Indian classical music has left the music fraternity, fans, and entire nation in deep sorrow.
Birth And Education
Born on March 9, 1951 in Mumbai, Zakir Hussain Allaraka Qureshi went to St. Michael’s High School in Mahim and was graduated from Mumbai St. Xavier’s College.
Role Of His Father; Wife & Family
One of the greatest tabla players in the world, Hussain learned the art of playing it from his father Allah Rakha Khan during his childhood. He lived the illustrious music journey with his wife Antonia Minnecola, a former Kathak dancer. The couple tied the knot in 1978 and has two daughters named Anisa Qureshi. and Isabella Qureshi.

First Concert At 11
Zakir marked the beginning of his distinguished career with his first concert in America at the age of 11. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023 for his groundbreaking contributions to the music industry.
Global Recognition
Hussain launched his first album ‘Living in the Material World’ in 1973. He was also the first Indian musician to be invited by former US President Barack Obama to the ‘All-Star Global Concert’ at the White House. He gained international acclaim for two of his big programs – The Planet Drum (1992) and Global Drum (2009).
Zakir Hussain’s Passion For Tabla
Hussain was fascinated by music since his childhood, his mother Biwi Begum revealed. According to reports, he would often mimic his father playing the tabla by tapping his fingers on any tune over the flat surfaces.
