World Theatre Day 2023: This day is celebrated around the world on March 27th every year to promote the importance of the theatrical form. A theatre is an art form that not only provides entertainment but also educates and inspires people. Many plays are staged on a variety of themes, including social issues, entertainment and comedy.
The theme of World Theater Day is ‘Theatre and a Culture of Peace’, set by the International Theater Association.
For this special occasion, here is a list of some of the greatest actors of our generation, who had strong theatrical backgrounds and achieved great success in Bollywood.
1. Piyush Mishra
Piyush Mishra is a film and theatre actor, music director, lyricist, singer and screenwriter. In 1986, the actor graduated from the National School of Drama and started his career in Hindi theatre. In the next decade, he performed as a theatre director, actor, lyricist and singer.
2. Radhika Apte
Radhika Apte has worked in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali and English films. The actress made her directorial debut with The Sleepwalkers. Radhika was affiliated with Mohit Takarlkar’s theatre company Aasakta.
3. Manoj Bajpayee
Manoj Bajpayee is an Indian film actor who has worked in Bollywood, Telugu and Tamil films. At the age of 17, he went to Delhi and applied to the National Drama School but was rejected four times. He continued his studies in college and acted part-time with the help of Barry John.
4. Konkona Sen
Konkona Sen Sharma is an actress, writer and director who works primarily in Hindi and Bengali films. She is the daughter of film director and actress Aparna Sen. Konkona shared the stage with Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey and Sheeba Chadha in Atul Kumar’s play The Blue Mug. The play toured around the world.
5. Pankaj Tripathi
Pankaj Tripathi is considered one of the most talented actors in the world of cinema. After graduating from the National School of Drama in 2004, he moved to Mumbai. With the breakthrough that followed his role in Gangs of Wasseypur, there was no turning back.

6. Richa Chadda
Richa Chadda is known for her role as Bholi Punjaban in the Fukrey series. She made her supporting actress debut in the movie “Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!” The actress also occurred in the play Trivial Disasters. The play premiered in 2014 and was directed by Atul Kumar.
7. Nawazuddin Siddiqui
After being recognized by the Gangs of Wasseypur 2, there was no turning back for the actor. The actor graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in 1996. After graduation, Nawaz worked with Manoj Bajpayee and Saurabh Shukla in the Sakshi Theater Group.
8. Kalki Koechlin
Kalki Koechlin is a French actress and writer. She studied acting at Goldsmiths, University of London, which allowed her to work with local theatre companies. The actress made her film debut with the drama Dev.D (2009). Kalki has appeared in two highest-grossing comedy films, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
9. Rajkummar Rao
Rajkummar Rao is a film actor who is famous for his work in Bollywood. After that, he studied acting at FTII. To follow acting as a career, he moved to Mumbai and performed in theatre at the Kshitij Repertory and Sri Ram Centre.
10. Huma Qureshi
Huma Saleem Qureshi is an actress and model who mainly appears in Bollywood movies. The actress has worked with many theatre directors like NK Sharma, Sohaila Kapur, Aamir Raza Husain, and Rahul Pulkeshi.
11. Shefali Shah
Shefali Shah’s acting career began on the Gujarat stage and made her television debut in 1993. After her small roles in television and brief film appearance in Rangeela (1995), she became widely known in 1997 due to her role in the popular series Hasratein.
12. Irrfan Khan
Irrfan Khan was an actor who appeared in Hindi, British and American films. Debuted at Salaam Bombay in 1987. He then moved to Mumbai and worked in various theatre and television positions. Irfan’s death left a huge void in the film industry that is almost impossible to fill.
