Zubeen Garg, best known for his chartbuster sing ‘Ya Ali’, passed away at the age of 52. He died in a freak accident in Singapore while scuba diving. The singer was set to perform on September 20 and 21 in Singapore for the North East India Festival. His sudden demise has left a void in the Indian music industry.
Who was Zubeen Garg?
Zubeen Garg was a popular Assamese, Bengali and Hindi singer, but also sang in over 40 languages.
About his work:
Zubeen started his career as a professional singer in 1992 and released his debut album ‘Anamika’. He later recorded his first songs, ‘Tumi Junu Pariba Hun’ and ‘Tumi Junaki Hubakh’ in 1993. He released his first bihu album, Ujan Piriti, before moving to Mumbai in 1995.
The late singer made his debut in Bollywood with the Inipop album ‘Chandni Raat’ and later recorded several songs for ‘Chanda’, ‘Shradhaanjali’, ‘Sparsh’ and many more. He also lent his voice to the songs for several movies, ‘Gaddaar’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Doli Saja Ke Rakhna’, ‘Fiza’, and ‘Kaante’.
After finding success in Hindi cinema, he made his debut in the Bengali music industry in 2003. He got his big break through with the song ‘Ya Ali’ from the movie ‘Gangster’.
About his personal life:
Zubeen married Garima Saikia, a fashion designer, in 2002. He was born into an Assamese Brahmin family in Meghalaya, but considered himself irreligious. He also got into controversies due to his different opinions on caste and religion.

The news of his sudden death was confirmed by a representative of the North East India Festival in Singapore. While speaking to NDTV, Anuj Kumar Boruah, the representative of North East India Festival, said, “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Zubeen Garg’s passing. While scuba diving, he experienced breathing difficulties and was immediately given CPR before being rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared deceased in the ICU around 2.30 pm IST.”
His well wishers have expressed their grief and condolences after hearing about his sudden demise.
