Veteran Bengali film actor Joy Banerjee passed away on Monday morning, August 25, 2025, at a private hospital in Kolkata. He was 62. Hospital sources confirmed that the veteran actor had been unwell for some time and was recently admitted with respiratory complications.
Born on May 23, 1963, Banerjee won the hearts of audiences with his performances in films like Nagmati, Chopra, Hirak Jayanti, and Milan Tithi. He made his film debut opposite Debashree Roy in the film Aparupa (1982), directed by Videsh Sarkar.
He was once part of the BJP’s state committee and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Birbhum in 2014 and Uluberia in 2019. He also contested the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from Birbhum and Uluberia but lost. In 2017, he became a member of the BJP National Executive Committee. Joy has tried his luck in elections for the BJP several times, but each time he faced defeat.
