Veteran Marathi actress Daya Dongre, known for her powerful performances in theatre, television, and films, passed away at the age of 85 after an age related illness. Born as Daya Modak on March 11, 1940, she enjoyed a long and successful career, leaving a lasting impact on the Marathi entertainment industry.
Who Was Daya Dongre?
Daya Dongre was born in Amravati, Maharashtra, into a family of artists. Her mother, Yamunatai Modak, was an actress, and her aunt, Shanta Modak, was a singer and actress. Daya first became known for winning a singing competition on All India Radio.
At 16, she began acting with the play Rambha. She later studied at Fergusson College in Pune and joined the National School of Drama (NSD). After getting married, she took a break from her studies, but her husband, Shekhar Dongre, encouraged her to continue acting.
Daya Dongre became well known through the Doordarshan show Gajara. She was famous for playing strong and sometimes strict mother-in-law characters in Marathi and Hindi films like Maaybaap, Atmavishwas, Navri Mile Navryala, Khatyal Sasu Nathal Soon, Naqaab, and Lalchi.
On TV, she appeared in popular Marathi shows such as Tujhi Majhi Jamali Jodi Re, Nanda Saukhya Bhare, Awhan, and Swami. The Government of Maharashtra honoured her for her outstanding performances in Maaybaap and Khatyal Sasu Nathal Soon.
Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde expresses condolences
Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde also paid tribute, calling her a legend of the Marathi stage and screen. He wrote in Marathi, “Extremely saddened to hear of the demise of veteran actress Daya Dongre, who created an indelible place in Marathi series and film industry with the power of her strong acting. An era of acting and art world in Maharashtra has set. We all share the grief of their families and fans. May God grant eternal peace to his soul. A heartfelt tribute.”
