Chhannulal Mishra, a legendary Hindustani classical singer, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 89. He was reportedly battling several health issues, including Type-2 diabetes, critically low haemoglobin, and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). He was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday and passed away in the early hours of Thursday.
Who was Chhannulal Mishra?
Born in 1936, Chhannulal Mishra learnt music with his father, Badri Prasad Mishra, and was then educated by ‘Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan’ of the Kirana gharana. He is also the son-in-law of the late Pt Anokhelal Mishra.
He won several awards in his career, including the ‘Shiromani Award’ of Sur Singar Sansad, Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Naushad Award of U.P. Govt, Yash Bharti Award of UP, Sangeet Natak Academy fellowship by the Government of India, the Bihar Sangeet Shiromani Award, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
His last rites will be performed in Varanasi at 5 pm. His daughter Mamrata Misha told PTI that Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was was admitted to the hospital for the last 17-18 days with age related issues.
He is survived by his son, who is a tabla player Ramkumar Mishra, and three daughters.
