Actor Shamla Hamza has bagged the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for her powerful portrayal of a mother and housewife trapped in a patriarchal household in Fazil Muhammed’s Feminichi Fathima.
Who Is Shamla Hamza?
A native of Thrithala, Palakkad, Shamla is a mother herself and a former radio jockey. She made her debut in Thamar K.V’s 1001 Nunakal, who also co-produced Feminichi Fathima.
At the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) last year, Shamla shared how the film’s message instantly connected with her. “Many, after watching the film, told me they were waiting for such a simple definition of feminism,” she told Onmanorama.
About Feminichi Fathima
The film also features Kumar Sunil, Viji Viswanath, Praseetha, Raji R Unnsi, and Babitha Basheer in important roles.
Directed by Fazil Muhammed, Feminichi Fathima is a Malayalam social drama that talks about gender equality and self-empowerment. It follows Fathima, a young woman from a traditional Kerala family, who decides to take control of her own life and choices.
After doing well at several film festivals, including the 29th IFFK, the movie was released in theatres last month. Its OTT release date is yet to be announced.
