Malayalam cinema has produced another intriguing movie, ‘Lokah: Chapter 1 Chandra’, which is a superhero film. The movie revolves around a young woman who gains mystical skills while facing personal hurdles. She embraces her superpowers to save the world when evil surfaces. ‘Lokah’ has received an amazing response from the audience and has been showing a good response at the box office.
The Malayalam superhero film has been praised for its layered storytelling, powerful performances, and star-studded cameos. But behind its sharp writing and emotional depth stands a name many are now curious about Santhy Balachandran.
Who is Santhy Balachandran?
After finishing her studies at Hyderabad Central University, she went to Oxford University in 2011 to study anthropology. But instead of following academic career, she chose theatre and films.
Acting Career
Santhy started her acting career in 2017 with Dominic Arun’s fantasy black comedy Tharangam, starring Tovino Thomas. She then played the only female role in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s hit film Jallikkattu (2019). In 2023, she made her Hindi film debut in Gulmohar, acting alongside Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, and Simran.
She has also worked behind the scenes, co-writing and assisting Dominic on the 2021 music video Oblivion. Up next, she will be seen in Sambhava Vivaranam Naalara Sangham.
After the release of Lokah, Santhy shared a heartfelt note on Instagram, thanking her parents. She wrote that they had gone through every high and low with her and that giving up a stable life at Oxford for an uncertain career in the arts wasn’t easy on them. “To watch them feel joy and some measure of relief after all the anxious nights I have given them is the best thing the success of Lokah has given me. So a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has watched and embraced our film,” she wrote.

Blending Indian folklore, modern sci-fi, and horror, Lokah Chapter 1 marks the beginning of the Wayfarer Cinematic Universe (WCU). The film stars Kalyani Priyadarshan, Naslen, Sandy, alongside Arun Kurian, Chandu Salimkumar, Nishanth Sagar, Raghunath Paleri, Vijayaraghavan, Nithya Shri, and Sarath Sabha.
Talking about its OTT release, the makers have not announced their official streaming partner yet. According to Indiatimes, ‘Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra’ will reportedly release on Netflix after its theatrical run. Dulquer Salmaan’s previously produced movies ‘Kurup’ and ‘Maniyarayile Ashokan’ have also been released on Netflix.
