No better homage to the spirit of womanhood crushed by the rites of patriarchy has ever been written.
The incandescent Vyjayanthimala who lip-synced Lataji’s voice in the film says, “It is one of my proudest moments as an actress, to have such a great song about womanhood. Sahir saab’s words were like hammered inscriptions in rock. This is a song I am most closely identified with. No one but Lataji could have sung it.”
Recalling her initial reaction to Sahir Saab’s lyrics the incandescent actress reveals, “The song for B R Chopra’s film encapsulated the film’s theme of a fallen woman and her rise to respectability. My fiery speeches on women and their status in backward societies, were splendidly strewn in the storytelling.

The nautch-girl Champabai’s transformation into a domesticated daughter-in-law Rajini was achieved through a remarkable synthesis of music and drama. While the early songs(composed by N Dutta) are seductive Mujras, the later numbers are spiritual Bhajans and of course the song with a social message Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko .
I am proud to have sung one of the strongest statements on feminism on screen. Of course Lataji sang it as only she can. I was glad to put across Sahib Saab’s powerful words.
