Vir Das said Mumbai’s air pollution is like smoking a “Marlboro light.” He also called for action, warning that breathing polluted air can cause long-term health problems.
Actor and comedian Vir Das recently made a joke about the air pollution in Mumbai, saying that breathing in the city feels like smoking a cigarette in his latest social media post.
“I smoke a cigarette maybe fifteen days a year. The rest of the time, I’m just breathing in Mumbai air. It feels the same. Today, Mumbai was a Marlboro Light,” Vir wrote on Instagram.
Mumbai’s air pollution has gotten much worse lately because of big construction and building projects.
This isn’t the first time Vir Das has talked about air pollution. Last month, he posted a message on Instagram saying, “Unless something big is done, each government will be remembered for the pollution they let us live in. We will only understand the long-term effects on babies and old people later. Right now, it feels like new pollution, doesn’t it? And if we think it’s unrealistic, they might let us live like this for ten years.”
He said, “Some drastic policy decisions need to happen. Goes without saying that the decisions will make us hugely unhappy in the interim. We will moan like we did when we got new airports and new bridges, but it will eventually be worth it. I’m just saying it’s 7:30 a.m., and the AQI is 170. At this time, there are kids going to school and old people on walks. Air isn’t political, air doesn’t care about your income status, air isn’t religious, air isn’t patriotic, air doesn’t vote. If there’s one thing worth fixing, it’s the air.”
At that time, Sonakshi Sinha agreed with Vir and shared his Instagram post on her social media.
