He left everything for Osho, also known as Acharya Rajneesh, and settled in Oregon, US. Akshaye Khanna was only 5 years old at the time. The actor has spoken about Akshaye’s condition after his father left home.

In a conversation with Mid-Day, the actor said, “Its influence was not just about leaving his family, but about taking ‘sanyas’. Sanyas means giving up your entire life – family is just a part of it. It was a life-changing decision, which he felt was necessary to take at that time. It was impossible for me at the age of five to understand it. Now I can understand it.”
Understanding his father, Akshaye Khanna had said, “It means that something must have shaken him so much from within that he felt that such a decision was right for him. Especially when you have everything in life. When life doesn’t seem like there’s anything left for you to achieve. To take such a decision, there needs to be a huge upheaval or earthquake within a person. But one must also stick to it. One can make a decision and say that this doesn’t suit me – let’s go back.”
Why did Vinod Khanna return home?
Vinod Khanna returned home after years. On his father’s return, the actor said, “It was just that the commune was dismantled, destroyed, and everyone had to find their own way. That’s when he came back. Otherwise, I don’t think he would have ever come back.”
