‘Maharaja’, starring Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role, has received rave reviews in India and also performed well at the box office. After creative waves in India, the movie is all set to hit the theatres in China. It should be noted that ‘Maharaja’ is the first Indian movie to release in China after the normalisation of ties between the two countries following last month’s agreement to resolve the standoff in Eastern Ladakh.
The movie will release in China on November 29, 2024. It reportedly has received an amazing response from critics in China. According to PTI, a Chinese critic told The Global Times, “The strength of Maharaja lies in its distinctive cultural expression and unique narrative techniques.”
“As a suspense film, it uses editing techniques to cleverly conceal the key actions of the protagonist, interspersing numerous subplots to confuse the audience. Through cross-cutting, it creates a feeling of simultaneity and carefully constructs a labyrinthine narrative,” he added.
‘Maharaja’ revolves around a barber, who goes to the police after a burglary happens at his house. He tells them that his ‘Laxmi’ gets stolen and leaves everyone confused if ‘Laxmi’ is a woman or an object. Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, the movie also stars Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam, Abhirami Gopikumar and Divyabharathi in pivotal roles.
Other Indian movies like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Dangal’ and ‘Taare Zameen Par’ have worked well at the box office in China.
