A Legacy Carved In Television History

Marsh co-created Upstairs, Downstairs with fellow actress and writer Eileen Atkins. The series, from 1971 to 1975, presented a fascinating portrayal of life in an Edwardian London townhouse, the lives of the aristocratic Bellamy family “upstairs” and their servants “downstairs” being depicted. Marsh played Rose Buck, the devoted parlour maid, and appeared in every one of the 54 episodes of the first series. Her performance won her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1975.

Decades later, Marsh revisited her favorite role in the 2010 television revival of Upstairs, Downstairs, taking up the shoes of Rose Buck once more but this time as a housekeeper. Although the series ran for just two years, it warned audiences and remains a testament to Marsh’s still-vibrant presence in the British television sphere.

A Career Beyond ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’

While she was most famous for Upstairs, Downstairs, Marsh enjoyed a busy acting career on stage, screen, and television. She worked on award-winning productions such as Doctor Who, The Twilight Zone and The Eagle Has Landed. Her writing and creative input helped to define the representation of historical and domestic life on television.
