The song Dum Maaro Dum may be a blast from the past, the memories of filming it are still very fresh in the heart and mind of Zeenat Aman’s. The legendary actor recently took to her Instagram handle to share an interesting anecdote from those days, when they shot the track with Dev Anand.
“We were in Kathmandu shooting Hare Rama Hare Krishna, and Dev Saab had rounded up a gaggle of hippies from the streets to be featured in the song. Which song? The picture is a dead giveaway – Dum Maro Dum of course,” she shared, adding, “The hippy extras were delighted with their good fortune. They were not only getting to pack their chillums with hashish in beautiful Nepal, they were also getting free food, going to feature in a Bollywood movie and were being paid to boot.”
However, Dev Anand wanted the sequence to look very authentic. “My character, the drug addled Janice, had to really look stoned. And the easiest way to achieve this was to partake in the hippy offerings. So there I was, still in my teens, gamely taking long pulls from their chillum for take after take,” she recalled.
Zeenat shares, by the end of the shoot, she was stoned badly. “I was in no state to return to the hotel in that happy, dizzy and slightly gormless haze,” she shares.
Looking at the situation, the team members packed her into a car and took her to a beautiful vantage point. She added, “There in the cold mountain air, I contemplated the Himalayas and slowly, peacefully came down from my high.”

After coming back to her senses, Zeenat found out that her mother was very upset. “My mother was furious when she learnt what happened, and gave the senior crew members a sharp tongue lashing for allowing her precious child to “do drugs”! Luckily, I was spared her wrath,” she further mentioned in the caption, alongside a throwback picture from the iconic song.
Her fans found the story amusing and several of them took to the comment section to drop funny comments. One of them wrote, “And….(Like your Mother) I am appalled to know that you, who was still probably in your late teens, actually got stoned to do this shoot!!”
With the post, Zeenat also announced upcoming “musical extravaganza” for those who still love to dance to her iconic songs. The event will be held in Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai.
