Celebrated Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman, who recently turned 86 on February 3, is known for her stellar performances in classics like ‘Pyaasa,’ ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Gulam,’ ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool,’ ‘Guide,’ and ‘Chaudvin Ka Chand.’ Collaborating with filmmaker Guru Dutt, she earned immense praise from audiences. Despite being initially considered for a role in the blockbuster ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,’ she didn’t join the cast. Waheeda Rehman occasionally appears on reality shows like Indian Idol and The Kapil Sharma Show as a guest. With a career spanning over 90 films, she remains a legendary figure in Indian cinema.
Karan Johar shared in a special segment on Dharma Production’s YouTube channel that Waheeda Rehman was the initial choice for the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (K3G). During the discussion, Johar expressed his deep admiration for Waheeda Rehman, revealing that he had been a fan of hers since watching the film ‘Guide.’ The filmmaker considered it an honor to work with the legendary actress and shared a touching anecdote about his experience collaborating with her on the movie.

Karan Johar mentioned in the segment that there has been a longstanding friendship between Waheeda Rehman and his family. Recounting the moment he approached her for the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s mother, also known as ‘Grandmother’ in the film, Karan mentioned that she readily agreed to be a part of the project. They even began shooting for the film, filming the title track with the actress. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, Waheeda Rehman had to opt out of the movie. It is widely believed that she left the project following the death of her husband Kamaljeet.
Following Waheeda Rehman’s exit, the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s mother was eventually played by Achala Sachdev. Waheeda Rehman’s last appearance in a movie was in ‘Skater Girl,’ which was released in 2021.
‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ was directed by Karan Johar and featured an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Jaya Bachchan in pivotal roles. The film, released in 2001, is a multi-starrer family drama that explores themes of love, relationships, and family bonds. It became a significant success and is remembered for its iconic dialogues, memorable music, and grand production values.
