The film was released in 2024 and is directed by Reezal Mantovanty. Luna May, Darius Seenathria, Mikayla Rose Healy, Yvonne Dellar, and Denny Rahman star. Luna May plays Sulastri’s mother, while Darius plays the father, who has twin daughters Samala and Kumala both roles are played by Mikayla Rose Healy.
This Indonesian supernatural horror film, titled “Sumala,” offers a different feel from other horror films. Its story centers on two sisters one alive and vulnerable, while the other is dead and returns as a spirit. A dangerous ritual performed by the mother inadvertently awakens supernatural powers. The father, terrified, kills his daughter, but her spirit returns to seek vengeance.
The film received mixed reviews from audiences and critics. It has a rating of 5.8/10 on IMDb and around 3.5/5 on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, it’s a good horror experience, which also became available on OTT platforms soon after its release.
While the budget and collections are unclear, the international gross was approximately $1,655, or approximately Rs 1.37 lakh. It didn’t release theatrically in India, but began streaming on Netflix on February 6, 2025.
