The Supreme Court has rejected actress-politician Kangana Ranaut’s petition for quashing of a criminal defamation complaint filed against her due to her post on X (formerly Twitter) on the farmers’ protest. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta heard the case and also expressed their reservations about Kangana’s comments.
“What about your comments? It was not a simple retweet. You have added your own comments. You have added spice,” Justice Mehta observed, as reported by Live Law.
The counsel added that the petitioner, Kangana Ranaut, has given clarification for her comments. To this, Justice Mehta said that the clarification can be given before the trial court.
“The situation is such that I can’t travel in Punjab,” the counsel said. After hearing the counsel’s arguments, the bench suggested that the petitioner withdraw the petition, which was accordingly dismissed as withdrawn.
After the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed her plea, Kangana Ranaut moved the Supreme Court. They had ruled that the BJP leader failed to prove that her alleged defamatory post was made in good faith.
For the unversed, the complaint against Kangana Ranaut was filed by Mahinder Kaur (73) in Bathinda in January 2021. Her complaint claimed that the BJP leader made false remarks against her in a retweet and said that she was the same ‘dadi’ who took part in the Shaheen Bagh protest.
