Squid Game: Possible Inspiration

During the 1970s and 1980s in South Korea, an internment camp was established in several cities. For the unversed, an interment camp is where people are imprisoned in large groups without charges. In the camp, thousands of people were kept and later gained the nickname ‘Korea’s Auschwitz’, similar to concentration camps by the Nazis during World War II.

These camps were established in the 1960s in the hope of ‘cleanse’ society from poverty and other negative things. As per reports, ‘vagrant patrol teams’ were formed by the government and these vagrants were defined as the people who prevent a healthy social order in cities and society. Thousands of people were imprisoned in these camps which included homeless people, children on the streets, and protestors.

‘Brother’s Home’, which was earlier an orphanage, was the biggest camp in South Korea. Later, several horrendous issues like unpaid labour, mistreatment, beatings, human trafficking, and torture came to light. Among the thousands of people at the camp, only a few were homeless.

While speaking to BBC, Brother’s Home survivor Han Jong-sun revealed that he and his sister were abducted in 1984. He said, “A bus stopped in front of the police substation and we were forced into the bus.”

“They started beating us, saying that we were too loud,” he recalled and disclosed that they were taken to a private facility.

What Director Hwang Dong-hyuk Said About Squid Game’s Real Story:

Hwang Dong-hyuk did not mention this incident as his inspiration for ‘Squid Game’ but talked about the SsangYong Motor layoffs controversy. In 2009, South Korean automobile SsangYong Motor fired over 2000 employees, causing massive protests and strikes. Many people got into debt, died, and also committed suicide as a result of these layoffs. The filmmaker told AP, “Through the reference to the SsangYong Motor layoffs, I wanted to show that any ordinary middle-class person in the world we live in today can fall to the bottom of the economic ladder overnight.”
