Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire is getting a sequel! Yes, you heard that right. The Danny Boyle’s directorial featured Dev Patel as Jamal – a young but poor man from Mumbai, who wins the show ‘Who Wants To Become A Millionaire’, raising many eyebrows. The film also featured Freida Pinto as well as Indian actor Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles. The movie went on to win eight awards at Oscars including the Best Picture and Best Director trophy.
Who is making the sequel?
The sequel will be backed by a Los Angeles-based production house Bridge7, which is led by producer Swati Shetty and veteran CAA agent Grant Kessman. The production company has acquired the rights from UK-based Celador, the studio which produced the Oscar-winning film alongwith Film4. Audience can expect a sequel as well as TV adaptation of the classic film Slumdog Millionaire.
The news was confirmed by the agency in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Some stories linger with us long after the credits roll, and Slumdog Millionaire is undoubtedly one of them. Its narrative transcends cultural and geographical boundaries, embodying the kind of tales we cherish — ones that merge entertainment with deeply human experiences,” shared Swati and Grant.
Paytre Topp in Los Angeles and Nick Miller from Simon Muirhead Burton in the U.K. brokered the deal for Bridge7, while Jessica Hudson and James Kay from Sheridans in the U.K. represented Celador International.

Casting For Slumdog Millionaire 2
In Slumdog Millionaire, Dev Patel played the central character of Jamal, who with his brother Salim Malik (played by Madhur Mittal) navigates the challenges of life and reaches the stage of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. On his journey, he meets Latika (Freida Pinto), and the two fall in love. The film also starred Anil Kapoor as the host of the reality show and Irrfan as the police inspector, who investigates Jamal about an alleged fraud he committed to win the game show. Several other India actors including Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, Azharuddin Mohammed, Tanay Chheda, Saurabh Shukla and Mahesh Manjrekar were also part of the film.
While there is no confirmation about the casting of Slumdog Millionaire sequel, there is a high possibility that the actors from part 1 may return to reprise their roles. As the film is speculated to be a sequel, it could show the story following Jamal’s win in the game and his life after that. A report by India Times also hints at the possible plots for the sequel, as reported by a source close to the production.
“Boyle has reportedly toyed with themes like the cost of fame, identity struggles, and how life’s victories often come with unexpected consequences. What happened to Jamal after his life-altering win? Did the riches bring happiness or new challenges? These questions could form the backbone of an even more gripping narrative,” read the report.
Fans React!
Fans of the classic, however, are not happy with the idea of a sequel as it could potentially “ruin the good memories” they made with the original film. Several took to social media to share their disapproval and wrote asked makers to nor ruin the film. Others also pointed out how it’s going to be a challenging task to once again capture the magic that Slumdog Millionaire managed to create.
