Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away at the age of 90 on December 23, 2024, after battling a prolonged Kidney disease in Mumbai. Benegal is mostly known for his immense contributions to the parallel cinema and vast storyline of his films which were completely opposite of the mainstream cinema. The latter contributed to the Indian film industry with some of his most-known works including, Manthan, Ankur, Zubeidaa, Mandi and many more. This earned him about 18 National Film Awards, one Nandi Award and one Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

Mandi: The 1983 film directed by Shyam Benegal consisting of stars such as Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah was basically based on When pious politicians take out a madam’s brothel from the heart of Hyderabad, faltering loyalties and blatant hypocrisy come to light.
Ankur: The story of a wife and his deaf husband who are having an affair with the landlord’s son. When his wife gets to know about the affair, all four individuals find themselves at a crossroads.
Kalyug: The film basically depicts the competition between the two business-related families and is majorly taken from the plot of Mahabharat.
Mammo: Story of a 13-year-old poor boy living in Mumbai, along with his grandmother and sister. The boy is pretty outspoken and has been abandoned by his father.
Arohan: A poor farmer’s story who suffers against a cruel landlord and is based in the 1960s.
Manthan: A young veterinary surgeon visits a village where he decides to open a co-operative society dairy for the betterment of the locals and rural people.
