Shubhangi Atre’s ex-husband Piyush Poorey passed away on April 19 after a battle with liver cirrhosis. While the actress was dealing with a personal loss, she also had to face online trolling for separating from her husband. In a recent interview with ETimes, Shubhangi talked about facing criticism on social media and revealed the reason for her divorce from Piyush Poore.
Talking about the reason for her divorce and dealing with Piyush’s alcohol addiction, she said, “It’s easy for people to judge without knowing the full story. They assume I left him due to my success, but that’s not true. Our separation was a result of years of struggle. I didn’t leave because I became successful, I left because his alcohol addiction took a toll on our lives. I tried everything I could to save my marriage, but it was beyond my control.”
She added, “Even sending him to rehab didn’t work. Both our families also tried their best to help him, but addiction destroyed him and affected all of us.”
“I had to prioritise my daughter Ashi’s well-being, so I made the difficult decision to part ways. It wasn’t a decision made overnight. Things started going wrong around 2018-2019, and it eventually led to the divorce in 2025. Even after our divorce, I remained in touch with Piyush and encouraged him to seek help. I also share an extremely cordial relationship with his family,” she added.
Earlier, while speaking about her divorce to Bombay Times, Shubhangi said that it was painful and is now busy focusing on her daughter. She had said, “It was painful. I was fully invested in the relationship. Over time, Piyush and I developed irreconcilable differences. However, now, I’m out of that marriage, and I feel a sense of peace as if a heavy burden has been lifted. Now, I want to focus on my daughter and provide her with a happy and secure environment.”
Shubhangi Atre married Piyush when she was only 19. She is currently seen in the hit TV show ‘Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain’.
