Two-Oscar winning composer AR Rahman said his mother Kareema Begum used to wrap her international trophies in a towel because she thought it was gold.
In an interview with Film Companion magazine, Rahman talked about the awards he won and where he kept them. He went on to explain that he has moved on from the “award” phase and is now aiming for bigger things as a musician.
The anchor listed all the major awards that Rahman has won during his music career. AR Rahman revealed an interesting anecdote about his awards.
He said: ‘There is a room and then some of them did not come to me. I think some directors kept them as souvenirs. I kept the international awards in Dubai because it was wrapped in a towel. Mum wrapped it – thought it was gold. Rest are in Chennai.’

The Chamkila composer said he took away the awards from the room after his mother’s death. ‘I went to her room, took them out and gave them to the Dubai Firdaus studio,’ he said.
Rahman then said he was past the ‘reward’ phase. ‘I think it’s done. That part of me is there. I have evolved into something and I am looking for something new. Like a documentary – whatever I stand for and whatever credibility I’ve earned, if I can use it for something better, that’s it,’ he explained.
AR Rahman has won two Oscars, two Grammys and a BAFTA. and Golden Globe , six National Awards and 32 Filmfare Awards.
