A recent report by Forbes has alleged that Wondermind, a mental health startup co-founded by Selena Gomez is battling serious financial issues. As per the reports, the company has been unable to pay its employees on time and has even cut back on their health benefits.

Adding to the controversy, Selena’s mother and Wondermind CEO, Mandy Teefey, reportedly told staff that she had to take out a loan against her home to clear the startup’s debts. However, a source later told People that this claim was false.

While one missed paycheck has been paid, another is still pending, said Forbes.

Responding to the claims, a Wondermind spokesperson admitted the company is going through ‘growing pains’. In a statement to Forbes, they said, “Like many startups, Wondermind has been working through its own set of challenges. In the coming days, we will be transitioning into a new chapter and continuing our important work in mental fitness.”

Given her financial status, many fans questioned why the company couldn’t pay its staff. One Reddit user commented, ‘Billionaires billionaring again,’ while another added, ‘It’s ridiculous Selena started this company and can’t even be bothered to meet or pay her employees.’

Critics also pointed out Selena’s apparent lack of involvement in the business. A comment on Reddit read, “If she’s that invested in the charity, she should just fund it. If she’s not, then give the employees notice and wind it up. Not paying them is unacceptable.”
