Film and television producer and cinematographer Prem Sagar, son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, passed away in Mumbai on Monday. He was 84.
According to a report by NDTV, he had been unwell for some time and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital. A source told the publication, "He had been unwell for some time and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. On Sunday, doctors advised that he be taken home. He passed away this morning. The cremation will be held today at 3 pm at Pawan Hans cremation ground in Mumbai."

Prem, who graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1968, worked closely with his father’s company, Sagar Arts. The production house is best remembered for making the legendary TV show Ramayan, which first aired on Doordarshan in 1987.

Besides Ramayan, which became a huge success under Sagar Productions, Prem Sagar also directed shows like Shri Krishna and Vikram aur Betaal. He worked as a cinematographer for films such as Aankhen, Lalkaar, and Charas, featuring Dharmendra and Hema Malini.
Actor Sunil Lehri, who played Lakshman in Ramayan, expressed his grief on X, calling the news “absolutely shocking.” He Wrote,"Absolutely shocking news, we lost Prem Sagar Ji, son of Ramanand Sagar ji of Ramayan. Om Shanti."
Arun Govil, the lead star of Ramayan, also shared an emotional tribute. He wrote, “The news of the demise of Shri Prem Sagar ji, son of the late Shri Ramanand Sagar ji—who, through the Ramayan TV serial, brought Lord Shri Ram’s dignity, ideals, and teachings to every household via electronic media—and a renowned film producer himself, is deeply saddening. We pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant the departed soul a place at His divine feet and to give strength to the bereaved family to bear this profound grief. Om Shanti.”
