PK Rosy 120th Birth Anniversary: The Google Doodle today, Friday, February 10, 2023, honours the life and contributions of PK Rosy. She was Malayalam cinema’s first female protagonist.

Rajamma, also known as PK Rosy, was born in Thiruvananthapuram in 1903. She entered the performing arts field at a time when it was not viewed favourably by society, according to a statement from Google. She overcame the adage about the glass ceiling when she was cast in the Malayalam classic Vigathakumaran (The Lost Child).

The strength and bravery of PK Rosy are highlighted in the Google Doodle. Many years after she stopped performing, her efforts as a Malayalam film artist and her contributions to society as a whole were recognised.

Who is PK Rosy?

PK Rosy was born to Paulose and Kunji. Her father died unexpectedly, plunging the family into terrible destitution. Her early years were spent attempting to make ends meet as a grass-cutter.

Her uncle was aware of her passionate interest in the performing arts. He found her a music and acting instructor. She also studied Tamil folk theatre and classical dance in addition to this.

Many people think Rosy’s conversion to Christianity is where the name Rosy comes from. Rosamma became her new name, replacing Rajamma. Her mother lived her entire life as a Hindu.

When JC Daniel needed help in 1928 choosing a heroine for his movie, PK Rosy stepped up. This was considered inappropriate for women at the time, but it didn’t stop her from pursuing her goals. She portrayed the character Sarojini, a woman from Kerala’s Nair caste.

Later, because Rosy was a Dalit, the Nair community objected against her for portraying the Nair woman. The male lead’s hair flower gets kissed by the hero in the film. People protested the movie inside the theatre over this moment.

The so-called upper caste folks also set fire to her house. She escaped the state and rode in a truck to Tamil Nadu. She lived the remainder of her life with Kesavan Pillai, a truck driver.
