Charles Shyer, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter, director, and producer renowned for films like Private Benjamin, Baby Boom, and the Father of the Bride series, passed away on Friday at the age of 83. The Meyers-Shyer family confirmed his death but did not disclose the cause.
Family Statement On His Passing
In a heartfelt statement, the Meyers-Shyer family said, “It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father, Charles Shyer’s passing. His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind. We honor the extraordinary life he led and know there will never be another quite like him.”

Acclaimed Works And Collaborations
Shyer’s illustrious career began with an Oscar nomination and Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award win for co-writing 1980’s comedy hit Private Benjamin alongside Nancy Meyers and Harvey Miller. He later teamed up with Meyers professionally and personally, producing a series of iconic films, including Irreconcilable Differences, Baby Boom, and the Father of the Bride movies starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. The duo also co-wrote and produced Disney’s 1998 remake of The Parent Trap, marking one of their most successful collaborations before their divorce in 1999.
Independent Projects
Following their split, Shyer continued his filmmaking journey, directing The Affair of the Necklace (2001) starring Hilary Swank and the 2004 remake of Alfie with Jude Law. His later works include the Netflix film The Noel Diary (2022) and the holiday movie Best Christmas Ever! (2023).
A Los Angeles native, Shyer was born into Hollywood royalty as the son of Lois Delaney and Melville Shyer, a founding member of the Directors Guild of America. After graduating from UCLA, he began his career under the mentorship of Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson on The Odd Couple, eventually becoming its head writer and associate producer. His earlier screenwriting credits include Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and House Calls (1978).
