New Delhi: A lawyer from Egypt appears to be upset with how Cleopatra, their former monarch, is portrayed on Netflix. For those who are unaware, British actress Adele James has been cast in the title role in the OTT giant’s documentary, Queen Cleopatra. The project, which is scheduled to be released on May 10, has already encountered difficulties.
For portraying a “black woman” as Queen Cleopatra, attorney Mahmoud al-Semary sued the OTT platform and asked for a ban on its streaming services in Egypt. From 51 until 30 BC, she served as the last active ruler of the nation.

According to the Egyptian lawyer, the OTT platform is misrepresenting Egyptian history by encouraging the propagation of Afrocentricism.
According to him, “Most of what the Netflix platform displays do not conform to Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones. In order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world, there must be pride in the makings of such work.”
