Nelly Furtado:
Nelly was body shamed for her weight gain but she shut down her trolls in a clever way. At her recent show, the singer wore a t-shirt with a woman’s silhouette—dressed in a cropped tank top.
This is not the time Nelly talked about body positivity. At the beginning of the year, she made it clear that she did not have any cosmetic procedures. She further wrote on her Instagram post, “This year I became aware of the aesthetic pressure of my work in a brand new way, while simultaneously I experienced new levels of self-love and genuine confidence from within. I had to pursue some legal action against a few charlatans online selling services based on selling health and beauty myths about me. For whoever cares, I have never had any face or body surgeries or augmentation, besides for veneers on the top row of my teeth, quite recently.”
Selena Gomez:
Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, which is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, causing inflammation and damage to organs.
She has expressed her disappointment at facing trolling due to her weight gain several times. During an appearance on On Purpose with Jay Shetty, she said, “My weight’s a big [issue]. Everyone just has something to say and it’s really making me sad and — not even sad because, I’m not a victim, everyone — I just think it’s made me a tad bitter and I feel really guilty for saying that but it’s true.”
She added, “I would rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me. Not a model, never will be. I think they’re awesome, mind you. I’m just definitely not that.”
Kate Winslet:
When Kate Winslet was at the peak of her career during the release of ‘Titanic’, she faced a lot of criticism due to her weight from some journalists. She was only 22 at that time. Later in 2024, the actress looked back at the rude comments on her body and broke down in tears. While speaking at 60 Minutes, she gave a befitting reply to those journalists and said, “I said, ‘I hope this haunts you.’ It was a great moment. It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me. It was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific, it was really bad.”
Adele:
Adele has faced scrutiny for her body weight several times in her career, but she shut them down. While promoting her album ’25’, she slammed her trolls and said, “I do have body image problems, for sure, but I don’t let them rule my life, at all. And there are bigger issues going on in the world than how I might feel about myself and stuff like that.”
Meanwhile, in an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, she asked the reporter why women are always asked questions about their weight. She added, “It’s a little bit annoying that men don’t get asked that question as much. But other than that, it seemed to astound people that I was plus size and being successful, that was how I felt.”
SZA:
In 2024, singer SZA did not hold herself back while calling out some trolls for commenting on her body weight. Some comments claimed that the singer got some procedure done on her body to look a certain way. To this, she quickly replied, “Y’all say weird s–t like this and wonder why I’m different and don’t feel comfortable with y’all anymore.”
