Music Maestro Rashid Khan Lost Battle With Cancer, Passes Away At 55

Ustad Rashid Khan dies at 55 in a Kolkata hospital on Tuesday. His last rites will take place on January 10.

Renowned music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan, who was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at a Kolkata hospital, passed away on Wednesday. The 55-year-old artist, who had been on a ventilator and receiving oxygen support, succumbed to his illness. The mortal remains of the music legend will be sent to Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata for last respects.

“We tried our best but failed. He passed away at around 3:45 PM,” said an official of the private hospital where Ustad was admitted. Speaking about the passing of Rashid Khan, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “This is a significant loss for the entire nation and the entire music community. I am in great pain as I still find it hard to believe that Rashid Khan is no more.”

The musician’s health deteriorated following a cerebral attack last month. Initially receiving treatment at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, the 55-year-old artist from the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana later chose to continue his treatment exclusively in Kolkata. Sources indicate that Khan initially showed positive responses to the treatment.

Rashid Khan, born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, received his early training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (1909–1993). Notably, he is also the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.

Ustad Rashid Khan’s musical talents were initially recognized by his uncle, Ghulam Mustafa Khan, who provided him with initial training in Mumbai. However, the main and foundational training was received from Nissar Hussain Khan, initially at his residence in Badayun.
