At the age of 46, when female actors are often limited to playing ‘mother-in-law’ roles on TV shows, Rupali Ganguly broke this stereotype by taking on the lead role in ‘Anupamaa.’ Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the show set records, becoming the ‘most-watched’ and the audience’s ‘favorite’ show. The popularity of the show reached such heights that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi took notice. Recently, the Prime Minister shared a ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign video featuring Rupali.
In a special interview with India Today Dot In, Rupali discussed how ‘Anupamaa’ significantly elevated her brand value last year. She shared, “The show has received love from all quarters, earning me numerous awards and honors. Meeting people and witnessing the affection they show me brings me immense joy, something I never imagined. Professionally, 2023 was fantastic for me as I had the opportunity to collaborate with several prominent brands. Therefore, when a show performs well, it positively impacts your brand value.”
“Anupama made its way to Modi Ji’s Instagram page.”
While discussing her brand value, Rupali also talked about the biggest highlight of her career last year. Describing herself as a ‘big Modi supporter,’ she expressed, “For me, our Prime Minister is a star who has taken the country to new heights. Today, I can proudly say that I am from Modi ji’s country. He is my hero. When I got the opportunity to be part of the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, I was thrilled. Being associated with something he believes in so deeply was a significant moment for me. And when he shared the video on his page (featuring Anupamaa)… that day, I felt like I had achieved everything.”
The ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ actress Rupali stated that Prime Minister Modi sharing the video was ‘wonderful and unreal’ for her. She never expected such a gesture. Rupali further expressed, “If he shared it on his page, it means he saw my face. And that’s a really big thing for me. I want to thank my show ‘Anupamaa,’ which provided me with the platform to reach such heights. I still can’t believe that this has happened to me. Honestly, sometimes I go to his page and watch the video. It’s genuinely a huge thing for me, and I will always be grateful for it.”
“I hope that the Prime Minister has watched Anupama.”
Rupali hopes that Prime Minister Modi has seen her show and heard about it, considering that the show is based in Gujarat and is highly popular in Ahmedabad. During the conversation, she remarked, “I occasionally think about it and at least hope that he is aware of ‘Anupamaa.’ That would be the greatest achievement.”
She also shared that the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative holds a special place in her heart. Rupali expressed, “It’s something I have complete confidence in. I take pride in being Indian, and I always ensure to use Indian brands. Whether it’s vehicles or other household items, I believe that what you preach, you should practice. I feel that a big brand alone doesn’t elevate your status; your thoughts and beliefs make you significant.”
