Meanwhile, shortly after the death hoax, hashtags like 'RIP Jeremy Renner' trended on Twitter. It spread after an image of a deceptive Guardian headline went viral. Although the item is no longer available on news outlets, a modified photograph of it sparked the false rumours.

The image of the purported article read, "Jeremy Renner, actor, passes away at age 52 from freak escalator accident. Avengers star was left in a critical condition and died peacefully in San Jose hospital."
Some Twitter users pointed out that there was no use in believing speculations.
The user wrote, “#RIPJeremyRenner – On the contrary, actor Jeremy Renner is alive and well, as can be confirmed with a simple Google search. The worst thing about social media is one realizes how many imbeciles and grifters there are in this world that lies or lack critical thinking skills.”
