Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan’s Laapataa Ladies became one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2024 and also gained praise internationally. It was India’s officially entry to Oscars 2025 but did not make it to the final cut. However, the movie has now received a nod at the Japan Academy Film Prize 2024 and will compete with other hit international movie.
Laapataa Ladies will compete with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and Alex Garland’s Civil War. All of these movies were nominated or won an Oscars previous year.
The movie is set in rural India during the 1990s and follows the story of two young brides who go missing on a train journey. After not qualifying for Oscars, Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Studios, and Kindling Productions issued an official statement.
“We are, of course, disappointed, but equally we are immensely grateful for the incredible support and belief we’ve received throughout this journey,” read the statement. The team extended their appreciation to Academy members and the FFI jury for considering the film, noting that being included in the process alongside some of the finest global films was an honour.
