Kiran Rao, acclaimed director and producer, recently reflected on her experience directing her then-husband, Aamir Khan, in her debut film Dhobi Ghat (2010). While the film earned critical acclaim, Kiran Rao admitted to a tense and challenging dynamic on set, revealing an intriguing aspect of their collaboration.
Kiran Rao On Working With Ex- Husband Aamir Khan
In an interview with Filmfare, Kiran Rao candidly confessed to ‘torture’ Aamir Khan on the set. She recalled rejecting many of Aamir’s suggestions while being patient with others, admitting she felt panicked due to the film’s limited budget and high expectations.
“It was such a tiny budget, micro-budget film, and there was a panic that I wouldn’t be able to do what I wanted to do,” she shared. Rao also admitted to snapping at Aamir, explaining, “I was very patient with everybody else… but with Aamir, I could snap. He was my husband.”
The tension peaked after the first day of shooting when Aamir, known for his professionalism, approached Rao with a heartfelt request. “He said to me, ‘I’m not your husband or the producer on set. Treat me like any other actor and explain things calmly.’” Rao acknowledged her mistake, apologized, and adjusted her approach moving forward.
A Unique Collaboration
Despite the initial hurdles, Kiran Rao praised Aamir Khan’s dedication to his role in Dhobi Ghat. She revealed that some scenes were filmed in the bustling Mohammad Ali Road area, where Aamir chose to stay at the shooting location to immerse himself in the character, while Rao commuted home.
Dhobi Ghat remains a significant film in Aamir Khan’s career and a notable milestone for Kiran Rao. The film, featuring Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, Kriti Malhotra, and Aamir Khan, offered audiences a glimpse of life in Mumbai through an artistic lens.
