Suriya returned to the the big screen after two long years with Kanguva – an action, fantasy-drama directed by Siva. The film was released in theatres on November 14 and collected a total of 22 crore, which is the biggest opening given to a film featuring Suriya. Though reviews received so far have not been very positive, theatres are witnessing a good footfall owing to Suriya’s loyal fan base. However, the ones who do not wish to go to the theatres have already started inquiring about the film’s OTT release.
About Kanguva
Kanguva has been in works since April 2019, when it was first announced. However COVID-19 pandemic led to the team shelving the movie for 4 years. The film’s pre-production restarted in August 2022 and the shoot was wrapped up in January 2024. As per India Today, the film has reportedly been produced on a massive budget of around Rs 300 crore.

It’s directed by Siva, who is known for given hits such as Vivegam (2017) Annaatthe (2021) and Kanguva (2024). The film stars Suriya in a dual role alongside actors such as Disha Patani, Bobby Deol, Natarajan Subramaniam, K. S. Ravikumar, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala and Mansoor Ali Khan. While Bobby plays the antagonist Udhiran in the film, Disha has been reduced to a mere glamour doll in the film.

Kanguva OTT Release: Platform
Kanguva will be available on popular OTT platform Amazon Prime Video. As per reports, the OTT giant has brought the streaming rights of Siva directorial for a whopping 100 crores. This is, by far, the highest amount paid by any streaming platform to stream a Suriya film.
Kanguva OTT Release Date
Insider reports state that the film is scheduled to release after 8 weeks of theatrical run. Since the movie was released on November 14, the OTT release date is expected to be January 10, 2025, which will also coincide with Sankranthi. If now, it will release on Pongal, which is on January 14. No confirmation has been issued by the makers yet.
Another report by M9 news confirms the same. It reads, “National multiplex chains like INOX, PVR, and others have released the Hindi-dubbed version of Kanguva only because the makers agreed to this 8-week window clause, which is not a common occurrence with tail films.”
Kanguva Film Review By News 24
In News 24’s review, the writer called it a visually stunning but narratively flawed film. The review read, “Suriya works hard as Francis and Kanguva, but the weak storyline undermines his efforts. Disha Patani needs acting classes immediately. Yogi Babu’s misuse deserves punishment, and Bobby Deol should reconsider signing films without thought. Rockstar DSP’s loud background music irritates, making you ignore the impressive visuals. By the climax, you’re exhausted. Kanguva’s first part dashes expectations. South makers should slow down and focus on tightening their storylines in heavy-budget, pan-India films.”
Kanguva Box Office Collection Day 1
Despite the mixed reviews, the film opened on a decent note, minting Rs 22 crore on day 1, reported Sacnilk. Kanguva had an overall 37.27 per cent occupancy in Tamil (2D) shows , with major business coming from Chennai, Coimbatore, Dindigul and Kochi. Where as in Tamil (3D) shows, it was a little higher, that is 49.89 per cent.
